The 2009 Internationa Calligraphy Conference, “Calligraphy Connection 2009″ is almost upon us, and one of the members of our guild will be attending this year. I can just imagine Sam’s excitement, as this will be her first experience at a huge calligraphy conference, and I have to admit I’m just a bit envious!
Calligraphy Connection happens every year in June, usually somewhere in the United States or Canada. Last year it was held in British Columbia, and this year it’s in Collegeville, Minnesota at St. John’s University as it was in 2002. That year several of our guild members were able to attend, and what a fabulous experience it was! I know Sam will have a wonderful time, learn a lot from the classes she attends, and will have lots to share when she returns.
What makes this Connection extra special is it is being held on the campus of St. John’s University, adjacent to The St. John’s Abbey, where the pages of the St. John’s Bible are housed. When the Bible is finished, it will be the first hand-written and illuminated Bible since the invention of the printing press!
Hopefully the attendees will have plenty of time to enjoy this wonderfully beautiful example of the calligrapher’s art. Many of the St. John’s Bible pages have toured the United States this past year, and several members of our guild, including Sam and myself had the opportunity to see the exhibit when it was showing at the Tacoma Art Museum.
If you get a chance to see this exhibit, don’t pass it up!
You might like to take a look at the St. John’s Bible page, and also the Calligraphy Connection 2009 page, so I’ll include links to those sites.
Happy browsing!
